AvYtar

On friday night I went on a group date with ryan, chalet, tyler, his date, and coop. We went to go see the Divine Comedy show at BYU. I have to say that most of it was pretty funny. Some of it was wierd though and I actually found some of it slightly insulting. They did a skit called AvYtar. It was a parody on the movie avatar and empashized the many aspects of the movie that made it extremely predictable. The natives were supposed to be BYU students and the military group was supposed to UVU students. I understand it's difficult to not have a slight rivalry because of the close proximity of the two educational establishments but a good percentage of the people that go there, once went to BYU or are transferring to BYU and etc. We are neighboring schools and I personally wish that we could just get along. But anyways, the skit was supposed to be a joke but some jokes shouldnt be taken as far as they took it. The way that I took it was that they were saying that UVU is a worldly, industrialized, selfish establishment like in the movie how it has the theme of the industrial white man who could care less about the life of the planet and the natives. There were also many side jokes that hinted to some other things at UVU that were derogetory such as when the BYU students/Natives made a comment about football and then the UVU student/avatar soldier mentioned that he didnt know what football was-- this was pointing out the fact that UVU doesnt have a football team. There were so many more jokes that I have seemed to just block out in my attempts to not be offended.
I know now why there is a rivalry though. I hear all the time at UVU how BYU people think less of them because they think it's just a place where people who cant get into BYU go to school, and that its easy and corrupt and etc. I also hear that BYU people are all hollier than thou, judgemental people who aren't as perfect and nice as they pretend to be.
I cant agree that this stereotype is correct for all people involved with BYU however I can agree with the fact that people at BYU do look down on UVU as an institution.
These people are ignorant.
That's all I can say.
I used to be bitter about not getting into BYU but now, I realize that UVU is so much better and many more ways and maybe being the bigger man will get us more respect from those who just dont seem to understand.
